Our opium bed, crafted in China around 1890, is a remarkable artifact that tells a story of both luxury and complexity. This exquisite piece was part of an era when opium played a significant role in Chinese society, particularly during a time of geopolitical tension. In the late 19th century, as Great Britain sought to exert control over China through the opium trade, Opium beds became symbols of both opulence and subjugation.
This bed, acquired in 2000 from a closing Dutch antique shop in Curaçao and transported to Aruba, was once a luxurious element in affluent Chinese homes. The ornate carvings and elaborate design on the front and insides of the bed reflect the wealth and status of its original owners. In contrast, the less decorated beds reveal a stark difference from the opium dens of the time, where simpler, more utilitarian beds were used.
In those dens, the beds were often plain and closely spaced, providing a stark contrast to the grandeur of the wealthy households. Our opium bed thus represents a unique blend of historical significance and aesthetic beauty, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of indulgence and societal dynamics. Today, it serves as a serene and elegant centerpiece for our Spa-in-a-Bed experience, inviting you to relax and reflect on its rich history.
